Barbara Brooks Wallace was born in Soochow, China. She spent her childhood in China and the Phillipines. In 1945, she earned her B.A.degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her first book, Claudia was published in 1969. She won the William Allen White Children's Book Award in 1983 for Peppermints in the Parlor and the Edgar All Poe Award for best juvenile mystery for The Twin in the Tavern in 1994.
